A Word Problem

I have a quick word problem for you. You invite a group of Panamanian, Venezuelan, Colombian, and Gringo capoeiristas to your house for the weekend of Jan. 27-29 via text around January 5th. All say they are coming and excited. On Jan. 26th, you haven’t heard anything from anyone, so you text asking who is definitely coming and start trying to organize who’s bringing what food and drinks. You hear that Person A is coming on Friday night, Persons B and C are coming on Saturday, and Persons D and E may come pending a health issue. You announce that you will provide breakfasts and dinner on Saturday, and ask they they supply lunch on Saturday.

Question 1: How many people show up on Friday? Who are they?

Question 2: How many people show up on Saturday? Who are they?

Question 3: What time do they show up?

Question 4: How many meals do you have to cook?

If you’re keeping score at home, the answers are:

1) zero, no one;

2) 5, Person A, Person B, Person C, and – tricky one here – Persons F and Child Person G!

3) Another tricky one, so here’s a hint. You get a text from Person A at 1:12 pm saying she is waiting for Persons B and C to pick her up to go to the grocery store.  You then get a text from Person B at 1:30 pm saying he is leaving class in the city (an hour and a half away) and going to pick up – not Person A – but Child Person G. At 4:45 pm, you get a text from Person A asking what to buy at the grocery store. There. That’s your hint. The answer? Persons A, B, C, and Child Person G arrive at 6:45 pm. Person F arrives at 9 pm. Obviously.

Oh and also, Persons H and I, plus H’s mom, Person J, stop by for a bit around 2:30 pm. But you probably already knew that.

4) One. If you look at the aforementioned discussion notes about who is bringing what, it would appear that you would be cooking breakfast on Saturday, dinner on Saturday night, and breakfast on Sunday. You’ve asked them to bring lunch on Saturday. Again, these are so obvious…they aren’t going to arrive until after their assigned lunch meal, but being crazy generous, they bring enough meat to feed nearly half of Punta Chame. They also bring every condiment you can imagine, bread, veggies, soda, and a huge cooler full of – wait for it – Balboa Dark beer. I’ll address the dark beer news in a moment. That is huge and deserves its own paragraph.

So yeah. We had a typical weekend with my capoeira friends, which means the following: we had very little idea of who was coming and when, or for how long they were staying, we didn’t know what they were bringing, we didn’t know if kids were coming or not. What we did know is that we would eat and drink a lot and stay up to some ungodly hour of the morning even though everyone is falling asleep in their chairs while music blasts from a bluetooth speaker. And was going to be a lot of fun.

I was so excited to see these people. I hadn’t seen any of them since April after hanging out with them 5x a week for a year, so there may have been some running and jumping and yelling and kisses and hugs when they arrived. You may remember some of them: Árabe (Antonio), Lucero (who is now dating Árabe!), Árabe’s 4 year old son Alejandro, Mahalia, and Moisés.

We cooked about 3 animals worth of meat on the grill on Friday night, then stayed up until 1:30 or 2 eating, dancing, and drinking. Eric even ended up dancing because Lucero (Traquina, if you know her by her Capoeira name) always takes the time to teach and reteach him.

Check out Eric’s face!

These three are so sweet together. Ale, Árabe y Lucero

Lucero is a phenomenal dancer – absolutely amazing to watch. Moisés is also quite good. They’re both characters, so we love watching them dance when they get together. We also enjoyed “un baile típico panameño” from Mahalia and Árabe. It was just awesome. We had seen some folks do this kind of folk dancing before, but never our friends! So cool.

Here’s a video of Lucero and Moisés. I’ve never tried to insert a video before, so y’all will have to let me know if it works for you.

Here’s the Panamanian dance by Mahalia and Árabe, hopefully.

Sunday was pool party time. I’ll just share a few pics here, as this is getting to be a long post. Oh, and we found out what choripan is – basically a chorizo in a hoagie bun with onions, tomatoes, ranch or ketchup, kinda whatever. A latin hot dog. What’s not to like?

I also mentioned that we had other visitors on Saturday afternoon. Stella and Elliott, our upstairs neighbors from last year, came by with Stella’s mom after a morning at the beach! It was excellent to reconnect with them. You’ll remember Stella as the model (for a day) that I snuck in to see during Fashion Week in 2015 and Elliott as the neighbor we adopted every time Stella was out of town. They also watched Addie for us a few times.

Speaking of Addie, she’s doing some sightseeing these days. She’s on holiday in Asheville, living it up at the Biltmore House with my parents. Not a bad life. Her birthday is in two days – February 2nd. She’ll be 11 and is still jumping the fence in the backyard. Silly girl.

Punta Chame 2 – More Kiteboarding!

First and foremost, my niece Laine turned 6 on February 1.  Happy Birthday Laine!  I was lucky enough to FaceTime with her both before and on her bday.  Here’s what happens when her parents leave us to have a conversation by ourselves:

And here’s one that show just how grown-up she is!  I’ve got to get home to my sweet nieces and nephew soon!  Being away from them has been the hardest part of being here.

And one more from her birthday:

Also, Addie turned 10 on Groundhog’s Day!  This is how she celebrated:

Then Addie went to stay with our housekeeper for a few days.  Sadly, Eric is hooked on kiteboarding so I dutifully accompanied him to a gorgeous, peaceful, breezy beach in the middle of the week.  Again.

Seriously, if you wanna be happy for the rest of your life (yes Mom, I just sang the old song in my head), be in a couple where one of you is a kiteboarder.  Or a surfer.  Or a windsurfer.  Eric’s new hobby is the best thing to happen to me since capoeira.  After testing it out when we were in Punta Chame with Jennifer and Ray, he decided to invest in a package of lessons.  So there we were, back on the same beach two weeks later, only in a cheaper and nicer B&B with better food.  Sorry J-Ray.  We didn’t know.

Just like the last Punta Chame trip, we had a little photo shoot at sunset.

And took a few selfies:

When I was reviewing our photos, I found this.  What’s that right behind me?

Oh right, it’s a guy flying through the air on his board.  Amazing.  These guys would get 20 feet out of the water and just float for a while.  Beautiful to watch.

So, now for the interesting stuff.  Eric’s kiteboarding.  This week he had 6 hours of lessons – two hours per day on wednesday, thursday, and friday.  The first day, he got up and actually really boarded for the first time rather than just popping up and falling again.  He was so excited!  The second day, he started getting the hang of getting up, but needed to correct a few things on how he was flying the kite.  Today, on Day Three, he did some serious riding!  He was thrilled, and I couldn’t be more excited for him.  It’s so much fun to see him so into this.  I’m really glad he and Jennifer tried it out and that he went for the extra lessons.  I can see him enjoying this for a long time.  I actually just caught him looking at equipment prices online.  Apparently there’s decent kiting in Kitty Hawk…

One other update, we do not have the Zika virus yet.  We will keep you updated.

No, seriously though, no one we know has gotten it.  There’s an awful lot of hype in the news, but we’re not too worried.  There aren’t many mosquitos during the dry season anyway.

Ray and Jennifer’s visit (brother- and sister-in-law)

Eric’s brother, Ray, and his wife, Jennifer, came to visit us for a week!  They had originally planned to come last year some time, but then the trip fell through.  We were really bummed and thought they weren’t going to make it at all.  They surprised us a couple of months ago and said they were buying plane tickets!  We were thrilled.

This was the first time the four of us have been together for more than an evening without their kids, Rylee (7) and Tyler (almost 4).  Of course we love the kids dearly and have missed them a lot this year, but it was kinda cool for all the grown-ups to have a whole week to play and relax!

They got here on Saturday, January 16.  On Sunday, we took our time getting up and cooking breakfast…until I figured out a pet sitter for Addie and found a beach hotel for us. As soon as that happened, we were out the door and heading to Punta Chame within the hour!

Punta Chame is at the end of a long (for Panamá) peninsula about an hour and a half from the city.  It’s been on our list of places to visit for a long time because it’s known for kitesurfing, and Eric has been wanting to try it.  When Jennifer said she’d be up for giving it a go too, that sealed the deal.

We checked out the beach the first night, and it’s gorgeous.  You can see the mountains on the mainland on the other side of the bay.  Between that, the incredible sunsets, and all the kites everywhere, it’s just beautiful.

Jennifer is an amazing photographer.  She took my bridal portraits, actually, which I LOVE.  On the beach, however, we asked the boys to handle the cameras while we pulled out our tricks.  Jennifer is a certified Body Combat instructor (a fast-paced martial arts fitness class), so she practiced her moves while I did some capoeira.

The next day, Eric and Jennifer braved their first kiteboarding lesson while Ray and I drank Balboas (Panamanian beer) and watched.  We were pretty happy to be on our end of things.  It looked like a lot of hard work!

I can’t remember the exact order of events from the rest of the week, but the three of them enjoyed Eric’s new favorite board game, Terra Mystica, over a couple of nights.

On Tuesday night, Jennifer came with me to capoeira!  She did an incredible job.  She’s already an athlete with a lot of rhythm, so it seemed like a lot of things came pretty naturally to her.  I was really impressed.  She even joined in on a roda at the end of practice, and I got to play with her!  I was really touched that she came with me and very proud of how well she did.

The next night, we switched it up and went to a BodyCombat class.  I had never been to one, and Jennifer has been an instructor for a little while now.  She’s really passionate about the program, so I wanted to check it out and support her in the way that she supported me by going to capoeira.  It was great having her in front of me since she already knew all the moves.  It was very cool to see her in her element!  It was a great little group of folks too, so we had a good time.

BodyCombat!

BodyCombat!

On Wednesday before BodyCombat, we drove up to the Atlantic ocean and enjoyed a ziplining course in the middle of nowhere.  There were some doubts as to whether or not our poor little Toyota Yaris was going to be able to make the 4 km off-road trek to the beginning of the course, but she pulled it off!  That poor car…we could really use some kind of 4×4 sometimes in this country, but she has taken us through a lot!  Anyway, the ziplining was great – a lot more relaxed about rules that in the US.  Still safe though, Mom.  I promise.  J-Ray has the photos from that, so maybe they’ll be in a later post.

On the way home, Jennifer, Ray and I took the train from Colón to Panamá (Atlantic to Pacific ocean along the Canal), while Eric drove the car home, just like I did when his parents were in town.

Eric took Ray to the Canal the next day, then to Panamá Viejo on Friday while Jennifer and I enjoyed some rest.  Oh, and one night there was a dance party in the apartment…yes, just the 4 of us.  Somehow this happened:

Just two brothers, solving the world’s problems.

On Thursday night, before their scheduled departure on Friday, Jennifer and Ray found out that their flight had been canceled due to snow in NC.  Remember the snow/ice storm a few weeks ago?  Yeah, that.  I knew they were ready to get home to the kids, but Eric and I were thrilled to have them for 2 extra nights.  The whole week was just really relaxing and fun.  We’re so grateful to have had so much of our family visit us this year!

And now, here it is, your moment of Zen:
